Dutch Book History

This website offers a historical overview of the printed book in the Netherlands up to the year 2000. The handbook was written by 42 leading book scholars. The image bank contains images about the history of the printed book, a selection of highlights from Dutch book printing, portraits of printers and publishers, fonts, printer's marks, watermarks, etc. In addition, there are extensive search options for various relevant bibliographic files.

Dutch Book History is the successor to Bibliopolis, which was the result of the project 'Geschiedenis van het drukkere boek in Nederland', initiated and executed by the KB national library in the period 1998-2002 (see also the colophon). Various information systems were brought together in Bibliopolis: the handbook that was also published in print in 2003 as Bibliopolis. Geschiedenis van het drukkere boek in Nederland (2003) and various databases from the Special Collections department of the KB, the Dutch Department of Leiden University, the Library of the Royal Association of the Book Trade and individuals.

Both the handbook and most databases from Bibliopolis can now be found on Nederlandse Boekgeschiedenis. This website is currently still under development, but the necessary improvements will follow in the course of this year.
