Content
Advertisement for "De Hollandse Revue", a monthly magazine edited by Frans Netscher which appeared between 1896 and 1936 at the Erven Loosjes in Haarlem. The gentlemen in this illustration are sitting in a café attentively reading at a reading table of a type which was often to be found in Dutch 'grand cafés'. The well-known Hotel Americain in Amsterdam, for example, still has such a table. All reading together, the reading material is free, the atmosphere is warm and cosy. A table such as this attracted many customers and reading behaviour also encourages consumption intake.
