Content
In the 17th century, France was the major paper producer for the Dutch Republic. The modest production of the Netherlands itself in the Veluwe and in the Zaan region, received a strong incentive at the end of the century due to the long-lasting wars with France. The raw materials for hand-made paper were linen and cotton rags, ground to a pulp and mixed with water. In this picture the papermaker makes paper by dipping a mould of woven copper thread in the vat until a sheet of paper is formed.
