Content
In 1625 the play by Vondel, entitled 'Palamedes oft Vermoorde Onnooselheyd' appeared in which he voiced his indignation about the execution of Van Oldenbarnevelt, thereby criticising the politics of Maurits, his followers and the anti-republican Amsterdam municipality. The publication of the book led to a lot of commotion and legal proceedings against the author and the book. Vondel was fined and the book forbidden and taken out of circulation. This, however, was counterproductive as the demand for the book increased in such a way that within a few months seven reprints were necessary.
