Content
In the course of the 19th century the percentage of children that went to school, both boys and girls, rose steadily. Also, successive education acts (1857, 1878, 1889) required ever higher standards of professional skills from schoolmasters. According to the rhyme on this picture it led to a significant upgrading of that profession: `Should I not love him dearly/ Who with soft tact teaches us/ And with many useful matters/ Augments our knowledge ever more? Yes, I shall always honour him (etc.)'.
