Content
First volume of "De Gids", meant to be a general, critical periodical. It contained miscellanies, literary, historical and ethnological contributions and especially book reviews in which imitators and untalented writers were ruthlessly criticised. Foreign literature was also brought to people's attention: here is a rather humorous text from Charles Dickens's Pickwick Papers, translated by Potgieter.
