Content
Reading orphan girl from the Amsterdam municipal orphanage, recognisable from her stylish red and black uniform, painted by Nicolaas van der Waay (1855-1936). The girl is from a good home because the Amsterdam municipal orphanage did not accept foundlings or poor children. The orphans were given a good upbringing: because of the secularisation of ecclesiastical property during the Eighty Years' War, the orphanage had plenty financial resources for years to come.
