From c. 1840, throughout Europe, children's books appeared with moveable pictures. The genre developed early in England with the publisher's Dean and Son in London who specialised in this kind of book. In the Netherlands some publishers were also active in this field. One of them was H. Nijgh in Rotterdam who in 1861 published the "New Movable Picture Book" inspired by the movable books of Dean and Son. The movable pictures themselves were done by lithographer H.L. van Hoogstraten in The Hague.
