Content
The rise of the French-language book trade in the Republic was due to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. Thousands of Huguenots, among whom many publishers and booksellers, made their way to the protestant Netherlands. Publishers such as Pierre Mortier earned a living by reprinting popular French texts. The original of this pirate edition was printed in 1677 in Paris by the Imprimerie Royale. Even the dedication to the French crown prince was copied.
