Content
Small in size, print-run and importance, but large in the number of titles are the disputation and dissertations which appeared in the various university and athenaeum towns. Each student had to defend a piece of work on more than one occasion during his study although often written by the supervising professor. They were always in Latin - and therefore composed in roman type - and printed in a quarto format. The layout of the title page also had a fixed format. The size varied from 8 to 24 pages. The printing was usually taken care of by the local academic printer, in this case that of Franeker, Johannus Gyselaar, who also acted as the printer for the States of Friesland.
