Content
Devotional work, written in the form of a dialogue between a spiritual father and a child. 'Der sielen troest' was compiled around 1350, probably by a Dominican, in the area of the Eastern Netherlands. The intention of the author was to write an edifying work in the vernacular which would surpass the popularity with the lay people of secular and, according to him, useless romances of chivalry. The book was indeed read quite often, judging by the eighteen editions which appeared in Middle-Dutch alone before 1600.
