The bookseller Hermanus de Wit in Amsterdam had a very varied list. He sold theological books, legal books, `old and present-day histories', but also `decorated romans critique' and `spectatorial books'. He made this catalogue of his bookshop - arranged by subject and provided with indexes - expecting that the `Ge-Eerde Liefhebbers myne poogingen met hunne gunstryke Orders zullen ondersteunen, ter voortzettinge der loffelyke Boek -Negotie, ter opbouw van Geleerdheid en uitbreiding van Konsten en Weetenschappen' ( Honourable booklovers will support my attempts with their favourable Orders, for the promotion of the laudable Book Trade, to build Learning and extension of Arts and Sciences).
