Content
Romanticised representation of a street scene in Antwerp, with a bookshop against a medieval wall, perhaps of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. In the 16th and 17th centuries bookshops were often found more or less in the open air against the wall of a church or public building. According to the painter Hendrik Leys (1815-1869), this is what a bookshop in the Southern Netherlands would have looked like in the mid-16th century.
