Content
This engraving is part of a series of twenty architectural fantasies by Hans Vredeman de Vries. On the corner of the street is the Antwerp publishing house for prints `In de Vier Winden' (In the four winds) of Hieronymus Cock, who is standing in the doorway. The lady in the other doorway is his wife Volcxen Diericx, who was for some time to continue the publishing house after her husband's death in 1570. `In de Vier Winden' was founded by Cock around 1550 and developed into the most important publishing house for prints in the Netherlands, to be compared with that of Christopher Plantin for books. Cock published much work after and by the best graphic artists of the Northern Netherlands, such as, besides Vredeman de Vries, Maarten van Heemskerck, Hendrick Gotzius and Cornelis Cort.
