Content
This illustration of a wedding breakfast with guests playing music is by David Vinckboons, a refugee from Antwerp. He was one of the many artists from the Southern Netherlands who brought the visual arts, including book illustration, to great prosperity in the Northern provinces. Vinckboons' celebrating companies, a theme which he introduced in the Netherlands, was to become hugely popular. This kind of song books and love-emblem books in oblong format, with numerous genre representations and emblems, were very successful and found their way to a young, well-to-do public.
