Content
Jan van de Venne's printing shop in Middelburg in full operation, painted by his brother Adriaen. The two brothers are probably the figures to the left at the printing press. The two figures left are the authors Apollonius Schotte ( the man with spectacles in the foreground ) and Simon de Beaumont (the man next to Cats). The man to the right with his hat in his hand is Jacob Cats. Adriaen van de Venne was for a long time the most important illustrator of Cats's work. All three made contributions to the "Zeevsche nachtegael , ende des selfs dryderly gesang", a famous collection of poems that was published by Jan van de Venne in 1623, the same year in which this painting was made. Prints are hanging from the ceiling to dry.
