Content
Books were often depicted in vanitas still lifes in 17th-century art, but seldOMSCHRIJVING_EN were the books depicted in such detail as in this painting by Edwaert Collier from 1664. The left-hand book is Flavius Josephus's Van die Joetsche oorloghe, ende Destructie van Jerusalem (About the Jewish War and the Destruction of Jerusalem), probably from 1553, the other is Eerste weeck der scheppinghe des werrelts (First week of the Creation of the World) by Du Bartas from 1622. The booklet is Cupidoos lust-hof (Cupid's pleasure garden), a songbook from 1662. A letter with the biblical maxim `Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas' (Vanity of vanities, all is vanity) on the globe to the right denotes the transcience, even of the wisdom of books.
