 This textbook, "Trap der jeugd" (Steps of youth), was written by Carel Gelliers, from 1636 to 1644 writing master of the grammar school in Leeuwarden. In twelve increasingly difficult chapters (`steps') the pupils learned all the tricks of the trade of reading and writing.These kinds of booklets were used until far into the 18th century.
