Content
With the arrival of the Batavian Republic in 1798 all guilds were abolished, including that of the booksellers and printers. Now everyone could freely settle everywhere as bookseller or printer, a fact against which the former members of the guilds strongly resisted. In 1801 the guilds were admitted again, but their future remained uncertain and dependent on all kinds of ever-changing regulations. Only in 1818 did King William I cut the Gordian knot and the guilds were abolished once and for all.
