The Dam, with on the left the shop sign for the house 'De Wackere Hond' (The watchful dog) - now the corner of the Dam and Rokin - where, around 1623, the booksellers and publishers of the Hondius family were established. Around 1650, when this picture was made, the company was no longer run by a Hondius but the premises and the sign were still in the possession of the family. Many booksellers worked here in the seventeenth century who continued to use the sign as their printer's device.
