Content
Printers' devices often referred to the name or the profession of the printer and/or bookseller. The printer's device 'De Wackere Hond' (The watchful dog) of the Hondius family, major map makers and publishers originally from the Southern Netherlands, was inspired by the family name and their origin from the Flemish Wakken, but it also says something about their `watchful' character. As the imprint shows, Jodocus Hondius was still established in the Kalverstraat in 1614. The family was later to move to the Dam.
