Content
Facsimiles of the months of August and October in the 'Breviarium Grimani'. This manuscript in the library of the San Marco in Venice is, with its 1568 illuminated pages, one of the most richly decorated manuscripts in the world. In 1903 Sijthoff started on the extremely expensive facsimile edition consisting of 12 parts which was to cost 2,000 guilders on a subscription basis. The work was finished in about six years. The firm of Frisch in Berlin, charged with carrying out the work, needed two years of experimentation to be able to print the most realistic reproduction. Three editions appeared: in Italian, French and German. The calendar plates are the most famous and beautiful part of the 'Breviarium'.
